At 16 years old and after winning European and world titles in the junior category, Madalena Costa was crowned European champion today in the highest category – senior – of figure skating in the free discipline.
At just 16 years old, Madeiran Madalena Costa conquered the ‘Old Continent’ this afternoon and once again engraved her name in the history of figure skating.
In her debut in the senior category, the skater from Sporting Club Santacruzense shone at the Palapikelc Opicina, in Trieste, Italy, with a breathtaking performance, combining technique, elegance and emotion and thus celebrated her unprecedented title of senior European champion in the free skating discipline.
At the European Championships, the Portuguese athlete shone with a breathtaking performance, combining technique, elegance and emotion and after winning the short program, on Saturday she now dominated the long program, achieving the maximum score among the 21 skaters.
After winning the short program with a total of 92.43 points, this afternoon the young Madeiran ‘star’ once again gave the competition no chance, winning the long program with a score of 158.68 points from the judges.
In the aggregate of both performances, and where the new 2025 champion was crowned, Madalena Costa celebrated gold with 251.11 points, compared to 199.38 from Italy’s Gioia Fiori, who finished runner-up. Rounding out the podium was Spain’s Sira Gallardo, who totaled 182.48 points.
The other Portuguese athlete in the free skating discipline, Mariana Almeida, finished in eighth place.
