        1. Exactly. A resident or a quarantine-breaking tourist? It is fairly easy to spot native Madeiran’s but north Europeans? Hmmmmm

    1. So what? If you were supposed to be in quarantine and decided you wanted to spread your germs to all people around you I would be only too happy to report you to the authorities. It is not Stalinistic nor does it have anything to do with the East German Stasi who would get school children to report on their fellow pupils. If you are thought to be infectious and then act with such indifference to the rest of us I hope you get fined heavily, kicked out of Madeira and banned for life from returning to Portugal.
      Forget the data you refer to. It is an infectious disease with no vaccine that has a bad habit of killing the old and those with certain medical conditions.

      1. It is hard to believe but looks like the fear pumped in peoples brains by mainstream media is completely blocking them from critical thinking. Why do you wish another man all of these bad things ? I wonder how you will feel when every time you go to town from now on locals will report you as tourist breaking quarantine.

        1. Tough, isn’t it. You make the expression ‘critical thinking’ sound like something Donald Trump would use in a speech.
          I have lived here for over twenty years. It is my home and it has been invaded and we all have a duty to look after one another. We did it through the flood of 2010 and the fire in Funchal in 2016. Having delinquent tourists believing it wont do any harm to break the quarantine is serious.

          1. Just please remember, does not matter how long you are living on the island. If you are not Madeiran, you will be always an expat here. My point is if we will go down this route, we expats will be reporting one another. How one can tell how long you are on the island ? So trigger happy individuals like Hadley above should calm down and Toby to think twice what can be an outcome when encourages expats to report to authorities.

  3. How is this productive? How can one tell if someone walking around is a tourist that arrived before the 15th, a non-Portuguese resident that has been here the whole time or one of the apparently few tourist that have arrived since the 15th or returning residents that have been the vast majority of arrivals since the 15th. The latter group are all the only people that are required to self-quarantine, tourist or resident.

    This is not the time to spark panic or irrationality. Everyone should stay home as much as possible and if they do go out, try to limit close contact with others.

    1. The joke is on us John. Now the well overdue financial crisis will be blamed on this virus, and all of us will have to foot the bill, and scared people will do anything to save themselves. Anything the media and corrupted governments will tell us to do.

    1. If you are in quarantine then get someone who isn’t to go for you. There are several volunteers that can be contacted through Tobi.

  6. Could you please specify, what does it means – to respect the quarantine? what exactly we can or can’t do? as fas as I no, there we no strict prohibitions, or?

    2. Very simple:
      Quarantine: a state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals that have arrived from elsewhere or been exposed to infectious or contagious disease are placed.
      i.e. stay where you are put. Hotel room, rented villa, apartment or wherever.

    2. Ruby, you are a narrow-minded little Brit living on a PORTUGUESE island yet somehow believe it is YOUR island! I do not endanger anybody. As it is, I am at home in the UK and staying in except for essential shopping runs.

      I am NOT an anti-social tourist. In fact we have been going to the island for over 23 years and consequently, are not tourists. So kindly stop your petty sniping at my comments.

  10. We arrived in Madeira a week ago before any restrictions were in place. We are not ill. We would dearly love to go home as we are clearly not welcome here. However, our Easyjet flight home has been cancelled and as yet we have been unable to arrange an alternative in spite of continuous efforts. We love Madeira and have been visiting for many years but find some of the xenophobic comments on the blog highly offensive. If you want us out please make it possible for us to go.

  11. I fully concur with the message from Jan and Gordon Robertson!! We are doing our best to get back to the UK but meanwhile the majority of tourist are behaving responsibly.

    1. The majority do behave well. Unfortunately the few that don’t are threatening our very existence. Of course you want to go home and be away from a very different Madeira. It is no longer, for the time being, a holiday destination. It is an island on lock down because one stupid tourist decided to ignore quarantine and spread this virus on every bus she went on, which were many.
      I hope you can resolve your return flight.

      1. Looking at the live Ritz cams the Av do Mar looks pretty empty. Av Arriaga appears to have a mix of natives & non-natives walking around but far far fewer than normal. The Ritz Cafe is open and customers are at tables but as there hasn’t been a directive instructing all cafes, restaurants & bars to close as they have in Italy one shouldn’t be surprised.

      2. Charles Watson, I belive the Dutch tourist was on the island Thursday. Wasn’t quarantine only introduced on for those that arrived after midnight Saturday? One should be careful what one writes in the blame game!

  12. I am also surprised to see these xenophobic comments and reporting. I am also stuck here, arrived before any positive cases were reported in my country, before equarantine here applied, I could have been easily infected by someone local on the bus. People have different social distance here and some even seem to care only if they now see a tourist. Everyone single one should take precautions and maybe advise people to be careful if they see wrong behaviour. How do you indeed recognize if the person must be in quarantine??? I thought I liked Madeira but it starts feeling bad…

  13. This isn’t xenophobic or personal in any way. It’s simply about protecting the health of the quarter of a million people that live here.

    Those that are behaving responsibly in these unprecedented times are appreciated.

      1. Not very helpful, are you? You attack me because I am an expatriate but have no knowledge of how I live on this island. That most of my friends are Madeiran. The help I give to APCM. But I live here as a privilege and not a right. Tourists do not have the right to put those around them at risk from disease and not one for sure that has no vaccine.

  14. Interesting reading these comments from the UK. I hardly recognise the island we love visiting and think fear and self interest has distorted peoples comments. We are all affected, frightened and uncertain about the future. Human nature dictates that the vast majority are decent and reasonable and will always try to do the right thing. A very small majority will always be irresponsible and behave badly. Please don’t descend into a mob mentality. This will pass and I want to be able to return to. Madeira without the bad taste many of the comments in this blog are leaving me with

  15. It’s good to see that, even in these dark times, the British sense of humour lifts the mood occasionally. I understood that Trigger was a television comedy character from Peckham, South East London. Turns out he actually exists (under a pseudonym of course) in Walthamstow, North East London. And he is still producing comedy gems to lighten our day.

  16. Just read the comments from all the above and one thing immediately hit me. Why does Charles insist that it is the tourists fault?Does he not realise that hundreds of locals have returned to the Island over the past few weeks and any one of them could have brought the virus with them and may even have infected the Dutch tourist. If the tourists are treated badly and let’s face it they are lifeblood of the Island then if they decide to go elsewhere the Madeiran economy will be in serious trouble. If you wish to blame someone try the Regional Govt who maybe should have shut the Island down sooner.

  17. Advice please. I run a small AL. I have guests arrived two days ago who do not stay inside, and I know go to shop at the supermarket. I have offered to help with this. Should I report or not? Some comments say this is antisocial (I think that’s what dob in it means?) others that it is my responsibility to report. Help please! Thanks

    2. Yes, if you know for sure that they just arrived on the island two days ago than this is an instance you should call the authorities.

  18. Hi Toby how are you? I trust that you are well. First and foremost I would like to thank you for all the news updates that you give us all. May I just point out that This is how I feel, denouncing your fellow citizens is wrong. People should mind their own business and let the appropriate authorities do their work. At this very difficult time, I wish everyone all good health ,understanding , kindness and patience and we will all pull though. Denouncing NO. Kindest regards .
