  2. A sailor that lost track of global reality after a few weeks at sea. From a virus point of view, it doesn’t matter if you are a resident, a passenger arriving on a 150 seat plane, a passenger disembarking on a 3000 passenger cruise ship or a skipper on a sail ship with the other crew members. You are still human, the only condition required for the virus to spread.

    Scaremongering by suggesting you will not have access to medical care due to the lock down. In case the sailor has not realized the lockdown is precisely because people care about medical care in the island. Anyone that needs it will have access to it regardless of anything else.

    In Germany they banned more than 2 people gatherings. Are they afraid of foreigners too?

    “I actually want to go back to Berlin, but only with a direct flight from Funchal to Germany.” Maybe that is a little bit too demanding from someone who is in hell island. Get a flight to Lisbon and then to Berlin and pay what you have to like everyone else is doing to get home, including Portuguese who are getting back from other places.

Ive just read the English version and cannot decide whether the author is just a drama queen without much of a dramatic narrative and therefore attempting to spin “gold out of moon dust”, or just a simply bad writer. There has never been any problem accessing medical help, quite the opposite, and Friday 13th was not a sudden whirlwind, nor the government`s decision making process “ad hoc”. I was already in self-isolation from the evening of the 9th March. The author doesnt seem to have bothered doing much research before he sets off willy nilly to Madeira. Ive never set foot on a private yacht but even I know the difficulties of the Madeira coastline and lack of sandy beaches…surely the most cursory google search would have helped before he stuck a pin blindfolded into a nautical map on the table, while playing spin the bottle. I suppose these private sailors are so used to having the “freedom of the seas” that they feel they are above and beyond the restrictions of lesser land-locked mortals. By the way it isnt the Madeira corona crisis…its a world crisis – the clue is in the word pandemic which exists even in German and was currently in regular use before the author packed his sea-chest and duffel bag. Never read such self-centred twaddle ! Bad translation?

  4. There is a flipside to this article. As I mentioned in the post about the yacht taking on provisions in Porto Santo (which has now departed and is heading North East), there is a small armada of boats heading back from the Caribbean (you can track most of them using an online AIS tracker). Very few of these will have sufficient fuel/water/food supplies to be able to make the trip back to mainland Europe in one hit. Traditionally they pass through Madeira and pitstop in the Canaries on the way down and then via the Azores on the way back so they can take advantage of more favourable wind and currents.

    As ‘slanted’ as this article may be, it is not really designed for local consumption or that of non-sailors but instead it may reach the eyes and ears of those heading back East. Making it clear that Madeira is ‘closed for business’ may help to deflect some of those boats that are planning to take the more Easterly route.
