Crowds invade Paul do Mar

With the temperature inviting you to take a bath or a simple stroll, there were many who yesterday opted for a visit to Paul do Mar. At the end of yesterday, 22 May, the marginal met a significant crowd of people, enjoying a swim or a trip to the bars .

The same scenario is expected this weekend, where sun and warm weather are expected.

  3. We went there last Wednesday and we felt it was too cvrowded. People forget about the distance – ev they even can, because to order a drink you have to pass a narrow door with people going in and out all the time. Bar de Pedra tries to make people wear their mask when they come in, but many ognore it. We did not quite feel comfortable there, so we won’t go back there on busy days for a while, though it is our usual sundowner spot. We’ll go to Dona Maria’s in Madalena for a while.

    1. Peter, I think you are pretty safe now. The only infected people are in quarantine and no new cases in 16 days. I would say that everyone else on the island is clear.

  4. I agree with Maurice, a bigger worry will come with the tourists in July, if they come….

    1. Yes, you should run around kissing everyone before the tourists return ??

  5. 16 days without cases doesn’t mean that there aren’t cases it means they haven’t TESTED anyone to be confirmed to have it. I know of people who showed symptoms and when called to ask what to do were told to just stay and home and were never tested even till this day.
    People are still arriving daily and as a Portuguese resident here It’s clear to see that most people are already back to normal without any regard for social distancing or wearing of the masks except in the supermarket (pointless when i was in a packed bakery the other day with only the cashier wearing one. The next few weeks will be telling. I sense the feeling of untouchability that I overhear in conversations and am seeing more and more relaxed attitudes. Apart from the supermarket and the few businesses still shut or never to reopen Funchal at least feels as it did before this even started. I would applaud it if this was over globally and I didn’t have elderly and unwell close family members who live here.

  6. I personally am just not sure when I will safe to return to Madeira. Although I own a tiny, remote home there, I certainly would not want to bring an undetected infection with me — or acquire one en route or while there on a visit. I am missing Madeira tremendously but I guess I am taking a “wait-and-see” stance before I book my next visit. Right now, I am in the USA and am very disappointed with how many people refuse to wear masks or maintain physical distance. They just flout any kind of restriction whatsoever. I do realize people will do what their own sense of safety and comfort tells them is necessary, but it certainly doesn’t help that we have a president who refuses to wear a mask and takes a undocumented “preventative” pill as their example. My concern, like so many others who live in Madeira, is when the tourists do start coming back in droves…not just aboard planes but the cruise ships as well.

I agree with Linda, I too can’t wait to come back to visit the wonderful island however it may take a little while longer if this 14 day quarantine return to Britain still stands in September ( our ideal date for returning). As a full time worker it will be impossible for me to take a further 2 weeks at home. Fingers crossed that a sensible solution can be found for returning holiday makers, at present in the UK there’s a bit of a news debate going on regarding “people in high places” flouting the rules so let’s wait and see. Stay safe Madeira and I hope to be enjoying your hospitality in September ❤️.
