May generated 1,030 new unemployed in Madeira

Unemployment in Madeira is increasing considerably. In May, the official figures far exceeded the barrier of 17 thousand unemployed. Last month, according to DIÁRIO, it was found that 17,465 people were out of work in the Region, 1,030 (+6.3%) more than in April and 1,722 (+10.9%) compared to the same period last year.

Thus, the worst expectations are confirmed in view of the side effects caused by the covid-19 pandemic, and the rate increase is expected in the coming months. Compared to the rest of the country, Madeira registered the second highest percentage in terms of variation in relation to April, being surpassed only by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo. Compared to the same month of 2019, only the Azores achieved a better percentage in the national panorama.

If we compare with the month of March, there is an increase of 1,819 in the number of unemployed in the Region. If we go to February, the difference is then 1.875.

  1. Those are very tough, but probably not entirely unexpected, figures. I do feel for those who have lost their employment through no fault of their own. This pandemic has been devastating. I am guessing that a lot of that total figure is from the hospitality / tourist sectors. The knock-on impact to vendors and companies who supply the hotels, airport, restaurants, bars., etc., must have been damaged financially and let people go. I hope that there’s a speedy recovery once tourism returns to the island. We love the island and its people. We really hope things are turned around quickly.

  2. Did anyone really expect anything else, it is going to be the same worldwide although obviously the places that rely on tourism are always going to suffer more in these sort of events.
    All anyone can hope is that when people are able to travel freely again then all tourist areas will start to recover. The thing is though NOT for everyone to put their prices up so much that people won’t return.

  3. You have to remember that there will be a big correction of peoples priorities and holidays will go right down on the list. Having roofs over their heads, food on the table a job of work ( in a lot of cases at less salary ) are all uncharted territory at the minute, hold on to your hats the fall out from this is yet to come.

  4. Unfortunately, It Must Be A Lot Worse Than That.

    Since MARCH, Visits To SOCIAL SECURITY And UNEMPLOYMENT Offices Are Made With Prior Appointments Only, And There Are Days When The Services Simply Seem Not To Answer Their Phone Calls – You Just Give Up And Try The Next Day.

  5. Hi Tobi, Why do you fear the worse is yet to come? Being on the island you’ll have a better feel of the general mood and atmosphere. I see that hotels are opening up. We received an email from Portobay Group detailing the changes that are in place to keep staff and guests safe. Let’s hope they are temporary – I can’t see many people enjoying a “holiday” with so many restrictions and changes at the moment.

      1. Hopefully for those business that can’t / won’t open they will still be able to open once conditions are better. Over in the UK there are businesses (pubs and restaurants especially) that may not open again once restrictions are lifted.

        1. It’s will be the same here, places can’t afford to keep paying rent and paying staff. When tourism arrives it will be very little, and only then we will see the true scale of this.

  6. Businesses have to pay 30% of a furloughed staff members salary. The government are supposed to pay 70%. The business still has to pay around 200 euros per month per member of staff for their social security. All businesses can have a rent break but must pay it back. So it is a loan really. A lot of people here cannot take that risk as they would end up in debt to the tax man, they charge a lot just to close a business. And for those already unemployed for a while and struggling, they have no chance of finding a job right now
    There are some very scarce benefits for those who qualify, and just being unemployed does not qualify you. We know that everywhere is struggling, but it is hard not to be sad for the islanders as tourism is their major income and this island is already on its knees and in debt. Hurry up and come back safely tourists!! We miss you!
