COVID-19: THERE IS A NEW CASE IN THE REGION AND FOUR SUSPECTS

In the last 24 hours, there is a new positive case of covid-19 to report, so the region now has a cumulative total of 127 confirmed cases, IASAÚDE revealed a moment ago.

The same source adds that “there are still 4 reports to be identified that are being studied by health authorities”.

These are 4 travelers identified in the screening operation underway at Madeira airport, who underwent laboratory tests on the spot.

  1. It appears that travellers are taking advantage of the free virus test. This can and must be stopped now before it runs out of control. With test becoming more reliable and faster here a proposal:
    1) ALL arriving travellers must produce a clean test certificate not older than 24 hrs to the check-in counter. (This practice should have been put in place by the carriers in their own interest!)
    2) This clean test certificate must be presented to and checked by the local border control, too.
    3) ALL arriving travellers must undergo local virus tests. (The cost are born by this country as it is in the interest of its population)
    4) Until the tests are confirmed to be negative the travellers are to be kept in quarantine.

    Should a traveller be found to be virus positive the cost for the local test plus the repatriation cost are to be born by the traveller.

The trouble is we cannot get a 24hr test in uk before travel but those of us who have behaved properly since March want to come and support the economy in Madeira and let’s be honest you need it ! I obviously would rather get on a plane knowing everyone is clear but in reality it only takes one careless exposure at anytime to maybe catch Covid but the risk is very low and local measures are the way forward to keep the economy going until a vaccination is available fully trialed ( ie not Russian) .

      1. This is all very true Roger, and it’s almost impossible to catch covid on a plane, as long as you tack precautions there is hardly any risk at all. The island will suffer badly from this (as to much of the world) and at the moment the worse hasn’t even started

        1. When you say the worst hasn`t started do you have any predictions as to what the rest of the year holds or into next year? I don`t think I would come to Madeira until this whole thing is over and sooner the better.

  2. Well we seem to be mugs or should I say the Health Authorities are ! Why are these so called travelers coming here. That is the question I would ask at the border control. Hotel only to stay at no cheap sheds etc. Then they can be found ASP
    We want Genuine tourists or real ex Madeiran people !
    I wonder if the places these travellers used to frequent are either virus locked or terrorist hot spots.
    Unfortunately Madeira has become a haven where it’s cheap booze etc.
    I hope I am wrong. !

    2. As an incomer what makes you think that you should draw up Madeiran policies?

      The Madeiran authorities know what they are doing and have done, and still are, doing a good job at keeping the island clear of excessive numbers of cases.

      The island needs tourists spending their euros etc to get the island’s economy back on its feet.
