Covid-19 Update Madeira

Today’s balance sheet – Sunday – October 4 – regarding covid19 in the autonomous region of Madeira.

> 5 new recovered patients.

> 3 new cases of covid-19 in RAM. These are 3 cases imported from the United Kingdom

> Regarding the isolation of positive cases, 38 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, 28 in their own accommodation and 1 patient is in hospital in the Multipurpose Unit dedicated to covid-19 at Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.

> Madeira, the only region in the country with 0 deceased for covid-19. We continued to test, in order to isolate and recover, protecting public health.

> The region now accounts for a cumulative total of 238 confirmed cases, with 67 active cases and 171 recovered.

> There are 67 active cases, of which 57 are imported cases identified in the context of surveillance activities implemented at Madeira Airport and 10 are cases of local transmission.

  1. What happens to people who test positive if they do not recover by the time they planned to go back to their home country? Are they allowed to fly home or do they have to stay in Madeira until they recover? I wonder what their average recovery time is?

  2. Much of this, of course, could be avoided if tests were available in the UK. If Madeira can do it, why can’t we ??

    1. I believe faster tests will be coming out soon. Lufthansa is trialling some currently and once proven to be trustworthy I can see them being rolled out across airports.

      The results come back in under 30mins I believe. So, it just means getting to the airport a bit earlier, get the test & if clear you fly, if not you go home.

I have been a great supporter of holidaymakers coming to Madeira from UK to support the local economy however as we are preparing to return to UK tomorrow after a great fortnight here I am not surprised to see more positive results from UK at the airport.I know this sounds very snobbish but we have been seeing an increasing number of younger UK tourists in last week and I would not be surprised if these are with some of the positive cases and would not be in Madeira if they could go somewhere else quarantine free. With Jet2.com announcing more flights it will most likely be younger and not the usual more mature clientele that come which may be worrisome.

    1. Mostly young families with children and young couples rather than groups of young people going from bar to bar in groups of 20 like you see in parts of the Algarve or some spanish islands. To me they are different. In any case, first timers are always welcome. It is difficult to “sell” Madeira to the young but I have friends of mine from the UK, young people, who have now visited the island for 3 times in 5 years (and its not to visit me 🙂 ).
