‘Clement’ depression is coming

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has just issued a first statement for the weather event that will affect the Madeira archipelago since today and until at least the end of December 1st, the ‘CLEMENT’ Depression.

According to the IPMA, the communiqué, which is already in force, is valid between 6:33 pm today, although the effects will only be felt from tomorrow, and till 11:59 pm next Tuesday.

“Following the emission criteria established for the naming of storms from the 2020-2021 season, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere – IPMA named the depression CLEMENT, which is expected to be centered at 34 ° N and 18 ° W on the 30th November 2020 at 09: 00UTC, with an atmospheric pressure at sea level expected at its center of 995 hPa “, he explains in technical terms.

“The effects of this depression will essentially be felt in the Madeira archipelago, with the forecast of worsening weather conditions starting tomorrow afternoon, the 29th”, he explains. “Thus, between the 29th and the 1st of December, heavy rain showers are forecast, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms”.

On the 29th, the wind will blow moderate to strong (20 to 40 km / h) from the west quadrant, with gusts up to 70 km / h, becoming strong (40 to 50 km / h), with gusts up to 90 km / h in the highlands, starting in the afternoon.

On the 30th, an increase in wind intensity is expected to moderate to strong (35 to 45 km / h) from the southwest, with gusts up to 90 km / h, being strong (40 to 55 km / h) with gusts up to 115 km / h in the highlands.

An increase in sea waves is also expected, with a significant wave height of 5 to 6 meters on the 30th.

Taking into account the worsening of the meteorological situation in the Madeira archipelago region, it is recommended to monitor the forecast and the weather warnings over the next few days.
