  1. Tobi it’s so funny ? what you said about Ah Mary over the road goes to madeira.

    I have been living in London since 1984 I am 55 now. I am originally from canhas ponta for sol. Still after all these years living in London English people still associate Madeira and the old, no disrespect but it annoys me to be honest, they also are surprised I am not called Maria. Apparently I have a man’s name. Lol. I live in Islington London an area a chose 30 years ago to live because there was no Portuguese people living here ,today only a few I can count on one hand. And that’s just the way I love it. I don’t do the social thing with my people.
    Anyway but after having ived here all these years and knowing a lot of my neighbours they still think Madeira is the tourist for the old folk.

    You talk about the Gay community again so true a few gay friends as well as of my daughters gay friends all say nah madeira is for old people. We rather go to Balearic island.
    Regardless of who you are I feel Madeira now in 2020 is an island that cater for anyone. When I left Madeira at 19 years old god yes who would want to live there? Not me and certainly not young people from uk would want to.
    Thankfully Madeira changed moved in to the 21st century in last 20 years or so. If I think about it in some parts of the island up till early 1990s many people had no running water inside toilets and electricity, so Madeira grew in modernisation, they moved with the times. As for the gay acceptance I am proud of my people. My family had a friend who was gay in the 70s he is an old man now, everyone knew he’s sexuality, and everyone loved him I think he was the only gay person in the whole of the area who had the courage to be who he was and this man was well loved. As a child I knew it kinda was a tabu conversation to have but my parents were very open minded and always felt that we should be kind and welcoming to anyone, I have seen living in London worse acceptance then I did in a very old fashioned catholic small village that I grew up in… so glad that young people gay LGBT ?️‍? community or not are now getting to see what Madeira can offer. I also think people like you any other bloggers or adventurous like the Australian Jackson Groves showing what fun you can have in Madeira, that will be huge. Although be it that they need to know it’s not for the faint hearted you need to be fit strong to go exploring up hills down hills, And no golden Sandy beaches available. And especially that it really is not Ibiza.

  2. Lovely, lovely article, perfectly describes Madeira and made me laugh too. Yes, I am 81 and my husband 84 and yes I wear comfy Clark’s Sandels, seen me through many a holiday on Madeira including this year and more to come.

    Can you tell me the situation with The Enotel Lido (or indeed the whole group). I know that it has been closed for a while but I have tried emailing both the hotel and the group but have not received any reply.

  4. Great article and very heartening too. Yes I am one of the seniors but try not to be. Growing old disgracefully! I
    believe that the more diversity the better who would want everybody to be the same? We have only been visiting the island for few years but try and get here several times a year and want to see Madeira prosper and stay safe too!
    Madeira has so much to offer all varieties of visitors regardless of fitness, age, gender, race or culture.

  5. The image of the island being a holiday spot for retired British is now long gone. People coming from all over Europe and a wide range of ages. Now there are many activities for younger fitter people.

    My only bugbear at the moment is Rodoeste seem to have dropped the 9am No 139 to Porto Moniz. We used to enjoy taking it and then going back on the 4pm No 80. It made for a nice day out going over the top at Encumeada. You now have to either take a No 6 at 07:35 to São Vicente & switch to a No 50 or get the 10am No 80. I cannot understand why the 139 was dropped as it wasn’t just tourists using it but plenty of local people hopped on & off along the way.

  6. Fabulous article, but what are Lindas? ?I need to know! Lol. Seriously, it’s great that there’s inclusivity in Maderia, for everyone. In our local area we are made welcome in the local shops and bars, even though we can’t speak português, we’re like old friends when we return. We miss it greatly. Stay healthy x

  7. Yep, I know that (day 151 of my português course?) but in the article it says “And the temperature hovers around 20 Celsius, so you can get those lovely Lindas out and everything, no matter what Santa says.”. I was wondering if they were swimming trunks or something ruder?x
