GOVERNMENT ADMITS NEW CONFINEMENT IN MADEIRA

The headline of today’s edition of JM shows the possibility of a new period of confinement. If the pandemic situation worsens in Madeira, the Regional Health Directorate admits that in January citizens will be subject to new restrictive measures. However, the health authority ensures that there is still no community transmission.

  1. No community transmision !!!! 30 people got it from each other when off on a BBQ treat ( not a treat for the pig) How can they make such an arrogant statement, aside from being misleading its dangerous to the extreme.

    1. I was rather hoping this was lost in translation, however, I think various groups on the island are not taking things seriously enough. Over the holiday I saw several families around me having parties over 2 days both days different people. The vaccine will help but it will only protect the vaccinated person, it still means that they could be positive and pass it on.

    2. It is not an arrogant statement, it is a correct statement from the epidemiological point of view.

      What defines community transmission is not the number of cases in a specific outbreak like the one from the pig slaughter. Community transmission means that authorithies can no longer trace or link the several cases. When cases start showing up and people don’t know how they got infecfed and the authorithies cannot isolate who infected them because they don’t know who that is. That is what community transmission is.

  2. Regardles whether it is ‘Community’ or ‘Traceable’ the point is this Virus is ‘Virulent’ as such it transfers person to person quite simply as person to person contact,
    This Virus can overcome Bodily Defensive Mechanisms just by being in your personal space.

    This total disregard for your fellow man is totally irrisponsible. and illegal.

    This is not just happening in Madeira its wide spread.
    I had the misfortune to do our Bi-weekly shop at our local Tescos, adhering to the instructions and reccomendations.
    Mask and regular use of sanitiser arround the store.
    A group of 4 people, two couples in their 30’s using the same trolley not one of them with a mask,handling items putting some back on the shelves, I approached [socially distanced] and proferred a mask to one of the ‘Gentlemen’
    I was told they were not British and the British laws did not apply to them.
    These were Eastern European.
    I pointed this out to a Tesco employee, no more than 5 metres away, only to be told they were not allowed to engage with customers not conforming.

    So, it not just the Ignorance of individuals it’s also the lack of power to corporate bodies.

    1. I’m deemed [in the UK] to be an essential service [optometrist] working at close range means I insist on mask/PPE being worn by all patients and staff. The rule is simple, no mask you don’t come in. Sadly, if I refuse an NHS eye check the patient can complain! …and I know whose side NHS England would take. On the plus side, I can’t return to the UK but even here people think the rules don’t apply to them, just try to get in Contenente without a mask, it won’t happen. The big corporates should be taken to task. Like you. Martyn, rant over…Happy new year to everyone.

As stated above and not wanting to be depicted as singling out any race or creed but as a front line worker in UK working all through pandemic , it is ridiculous how some nationalities think they are above the law and rules set to protect them. This was exemplified by the case of 2 Romanian who were deported. Having travelled all over the world for work and pleasure, I made sure I followed local laws and regulations.
      Again rant over all the best for a safe and healthy 2021

If 30 people got this from doing the opposite to what they should have done, and passed it to each other, I dont care how you put it or try and defend it, its community transmition by any definition, they are not same household, they are out in the community and they have contact and spread it out across a WIDER COMMUNITY. God help this island if that message isnt getting across by now

  5. Good on pair of you, if its about definition, I hope your not next to one of these fools when they are breathing out all over you, call it isolated, community or just pandemic all comes to same once its passed around.

  6. Harry, you don’t seem to understand the definition of community transmission. The pig-slaughtering idiots caused a wholly preventable rise in the number of cases in addition to inflicting cruelty on a defenceless animal, but they were traceable, so this is not community transmission.

  7. Harry, the definition actually makes a difference. If the cases are not traceable then you are lot closer to have exponential growth of cases and have to go back to full lockdowns to control the situation.

    Whilst cases increasings is never good, if these are contained in specific outbreaks then the growth will be linear rather than exponential which means the health care system will be able to deal with that growth.

    From an epidemiological point of view, it a lot worse having 30 spreaded individual cases that no one knows how they got infected than one outbreak where all the 30 cases are linked to each other.

  8. Where we live in Scotland, the community has no incidence of covid-19. Groceries, meat and fish, wine also, are delivered by suppliers to your door. Items left on doorstep, delivery driver steps back and we take food into house. Only one person at a time is allowed into small shops such as pharmacies and local general stores.
    Pubs, restaurants, concert halls, cinemas, gyms etc. all closed. During lockdown, people are only allowed out for 1 hour’s walk per day. Masks are worn everywhere, hand sanitisers are everywhere, although personally, I wear gloves when out of doors. Above all, 2 metres social distance applies. None of this is particularly difficult but it keeps us all safe! Madeira needs to wake up to the virus they have imported, just like the rest of us!

    1. In the street I live in Funchal there are no cases. What a wonderful world Madeira is.

  10. Masks don’t really work. Lots of peer reviewed surveys has confirmed. They offer a false security and the purpose is probably to remind people that there is a special situation, more than offer protection for people.

    Being reminded we are in a special situation is fine, but most people don’t use masks correctly and this actually increases the risks of contracting upper respiratory disease and lowering resistance to COVID.

    Here in Spain you have to wear them everywhere even when walking alone in the mountains which senseless, especially if there are nobody around you.

    I don’t know how much the overall death count deviates in Madeira, but in Denmark and the USA are not higher than average years.

    We used to have between 2000 and 7000 that died every flu season, this year it’s as close to zero as can be.

    Also heart and respiratory, cancer and other big killers are way down, so at least COVID has a healing effect on the usual causes of death.

    Sadly suicides and mental illness is way up and lots of businesses has gone bust in the process.

    Maybe the solidarity with vulnerable has gone beyond reason the economic detrimental effects on a place like Madeira is beyond comprehension.

    Dying with COVID is not the same as dying from COVID. The distinction is unfortunately downplayed.

    I hope Madeira will recover in the new year and the rollout of vaccines will make people flock to the island.
