Searches resumed to find missing tourist

Searches to find the tourist who disappeared on Tuesday afternoon in a levada in Calheta, in the Rabaçal area, were resumed this morning.

Nineteen members of the Calheta Volunteer Firefighters, Forest Police and a civilian who knows the land well entered Fanal and are going to take the levada again to Rabaçal to see if they can find the 28-year-old German.

As reported, the foreigner will have informed a friend that he was lost, around 2 pm on Tuesday, but the friend only gave the alert to the Regional Civil Protection Service at 7 pm.

About 25 members were yesterday in that area, searching without success.

  3. One of the first rules of mountain walking should be, and is, don’t walk on your own. I really hope he is found soon

  7. It seems to have gone very quiet on the news front regarding this. I’m begining to wonder if it was a hoax. The R Janela region is pretty dense forest, but even so I would have thought the search teams would have found some signs fairly quickly.

    1. withdrawing my last comments. Not a hoax. I hope he can be found but it’s now nearly 4 days.

  8. By coincidence, I was on the scene Dec 31. for a tour when he the tourist went missing. There was an ambulance and firefighters. The next day when we came back to hike (with a tour guide), no officials were no longer on the scene. I cannot comprehend.

    I couldn’t help myself in searching every spot I walked past, in case I wouldn’t notice any signs of the missing tourist. If it were me, I’d hope someone is still trying to find me! People can survive even more than a week on water. And there is plenty of that there. Yes, it is cold at night, but there are no wild animals to be threatened by.

    The main thing on my mind is, cannot they order a helicopter with Thermal vision??
    Many searches worldwide have been successful and have had happy endings with this advantage. I am aware the helicopter cannot go too low, but there is enough possibility that some form of life can still be caught and measured by thermal camera! There is still hope!

    Who can be contacted in order to support and help push this idea on the government? Who can give the green light? I know there is a fine line, they do not want to scare tourists, and promote healthy hiking. But on the contrary, it made me decide that I rather would get a guide then go with my friends on our own.
    This tourist could be injured and is waiting for someone to find him. Hoping will not save him, we must do something! Any ideas or someone I can contact? The last thing we want are more innocent people getting hurt or lost while searching for him.

  9. How one can let around five(!) hours pass by before helping
    someone who told them that they’ve got lost in the plain forest, is far beyond me.
    On dangerous ground along with it.

    What ever inhibited said friend of giving help sooner,
    we hope it was worth it…
