99 new positive cases in Madeira

This is a new maximum of daily cases reported by the Regional Health Directorate (DRS).

There are 99 new positive cases to report this Sunday in Madeira. This is a new maximum daily number and the Region has reached 2,000 confirmed cases of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of these 99 new cases, six cases are imported (2 from the United Kingdom, 1 from Germany, 1 from Brazil, 1 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and 1 from the North of Portugal) and 93 cases of local transmission, most already associated with contacts of positive cases.

Regarding the isolation of active cases, 35 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, 719 in their own accommodation and 45 people are currently hospitalized (40 in the Multipurpose Unit and five in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to the covid-19).

On the other hand, today there are 34 more recovered cases to report and the accounts are 799 active cases, of which 168 are imported cases and 631 are cases of local transmission.

  1. Has the government not associated the ‘at home confinement’ relationship to Covid positives ? … it’s not rocket science to see or know that this is the main transmission source !
    I’ve seen people in our village out and about disregarding restrictions
    If testing positive then better restraints are needed and not allowing to go home – then socialise – and then share the virus!!
    Just look at the smaller villages and see the Poncha Bars full of people; even our local had a stand up comedian recently !! – hard to believe but I saw with my own eyes….. no social distancing respected.
    Look at the mountain BBQ’s ; we saw many families enjoying a meal together but far too many together- risking one another’s health!
    We need a full lockdown to save lives now despite many adhering to the rules honestly and respectfully for themselves and others.
    Otherwise, how is our beautiful Island ever going to cope and then recover.
    Look ahead folks- not just for today!

  2. This is alarming reading, however, most appear to be local transmission rather than imported. It bears out what I experienced today, people not respecting distancing…if we don’t take heed total lockdown will happen.

  3. Unfortunately it’s a “Won’t happen to me” syndrome. Some will pay no adherence to any rules until its gets a lot worse, a lot worse and affects them personally. ?

  4. I agree with the above comments, people dont respect the restrictions, partys and gatherins, none isolation periods, mixing with family and friends.
    I think we will now see none movement between municipalities, and closing of all but essential shops.
    This is bad and worst to come.
    So disappointing, we were doing so well as a island.

  5. Over the Christmas and new year holiday, I often walked in the center. The main culprits without masks, even though there were lots of people around, were tourists, quite a lot of young locals with their masks below their mouths, and most of all smokers who probably think the smoke will keep them safe ??

  6. I don’t think it is required that people wear masks outside in public areas, unless there is a danger of being within 2 metres of someone for a period of time. So it is possible to walk around without a mask with breaking rules I believe……unless someone knows differently?

      1. Thank you! I’ve been looking there but can only find the daily numbers, not officially counted together for the infections/100 000 – do you know if there are any? (I cant speak Portuguese, so I don’t understand everything on the site 🙁 )

  8. If we all wear masks, like successful low transmission populations ie. Taiwan, we can stop the spread. Like I say, you have to act like you have the virus, and you are breathing virus particles for others to breath in. Many show no symptoms. Health professional are begging people to follow guidelines. When you’re out for a walk, think of them, they are the ones who will be masked all day looking after those who didn’t feel like wearing one. It’s time to start appreciating doctors and nurses, everywhere.
