Madeira available to receive patients from mainland Portugal

The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Health and Protection, provided the Ministry of Health with assistance to receive covid-19 patients from the Portuguese mainland with hospitalization needs.

The regional secretary of Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, has already established contact with the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, and the operation of transferring patients covid-19 will be operationalized, as soon as it receives a positive response from the Ministry of Health.

The Minister of Health thanked the support and solidarity shown by the governors in Madeira at this difficult time when most hospitals are already unable to admit more patients on the mainland of Portugal.

Pedro Ramos said that Madeira has different beds, equipment and human resources to treat covid-19 patients, in addition to having an Intensive Care Service with a maximum level of differentiation for the treatment of critically ill patients.

Initially the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça can receive up to three patients, but Pedro Ramos does not exclude the possibility of increasing this availability, everything will depend on the evolution of the epidemiological situation of covid-19 in RAM.

This decision was agreed, based on the information provided by the technical directorates, in conjunction with the board of directors of the Health Service of RAM.

This operation to transfer covid-19 patients from Portuguese mainland hospitals to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital has the collaboration of the Air Force, through the Madeira Operational Command.

It is important to emphasize that according to the data provided, in the newsletter yesterday, 64 people were hospitalized at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça (56 people in a multipurpose unit and 8 in the Intensive Care unit).
