Dengue mosquito motivates new alert in Madeira

The  dengue mosquito motivates a new alert. The population density of Aedes aegypti mosquito has grown in recent weeks due to the heat in Madeira and the regional Health Deputy Director calls on the population to eliminate breeding sites.

Any still lying water can be a breeding ground for these mosquitos, so try to make sure this is at its minimum in your gardens and balconies.

  1. And yet there’s still people in their rose tinted glasses, who say Madeira doesn’t have any mosquitoes!

    1. No cure or effective treatment for Dengue. This is from the NHS website:–

      Symptoms of dengue usually develop suddenly, about 5 to 8 days after you become infected.

      Symptoms can include:

      a high temperature,
      or feeling hot
      or shivery
      a severe headache
      pain behind the eyes
      muscle and joint pain
      feeling or being sick
      a widespread red rash
      tummy pain and loss of appetite

      The symptoms normally pass after about 1 week, although you may feel tired and slightly unwell for several weeks afterwards.

      Take Paracetamol for fever/pain do NOT take aspirin or ibuprofen. Drink plenty of fluids and rest up.

    2. Sure someone will contradict me but when first there 16 years ago there wasn’t a problem but in recent years I have been bitten if not wearing my Avon Skin So Soft!!! Pharmacy there does great cream called Phenergan which stops the itching.
      Just a thought but could the arrival of mosquitoes be after the floods of 2010?

  2. For sure there are mosquitoes on Madeira. I killed two in my bedroom last night. This is Ajuda, Funchal.
    I don’t know which species they were. They are too flat to tell.

  3. Jill , you are so right about the original avon skin so soft spray . Soldiers took this with them when they went to Afghanistan. It worked well for all biting insects .

    1. Jane what a shame they stopped doing the shower gel and soap but at least the oil still around. I usually buy a load at beginning of summer

  4. Jill , I think once it became ” known ” that the original oil spray worked there was no way Avon would discontinue it . My daughter took 6 bottles to Afghanistan in 2009 and my son did the same 2 years later. It’s available on eBay sometimes too. I may be wrong but I seem to remember that one of the ingredients is a form of citronella . I wasn’t aware they used to do soap and shower gel .

  5. Totally agree about Avon Skin so Soft It works very effectively in the Scottish Midge also doesnt stain your clothes or irritate skin so you can spray it ALL over yourself!!!

  7. In over 30 years I’ve never known Madeira not to have mosquitoes. As part of the welcome pack at the Pestana hotels they warn you about Dengue and Zica. You also have locust.

  8. Another tip which I picked up is wrights coal tar soap, used it in India when on business, never bitten, my colleagues were bitten several times.
    Only had one bar so couldnt share ?

  10. I spent a year in Sao tome, a very poor country that managed to get rid of disease carrying mosquitos, they sterilised the males or many of them, if they can do it Madeira certainly can. BTW the best thing to pop on bites is toothpaste, a little miracle cure.
