  2. Well after of so many speculations it seems that the architect made a nice design and will be a great improvement to the area

    1. … I agree with you Ross ,, I like it the way it has been for years, if they’d have kept it a touch more maintained, it had character and a crumbly charm like a lot of Funchal has ,, I’m not keen on this slick modern bland look ,, if it was all done using darker volcanic stone it would be more in keeping with the historic feel of the town …

    1. Anything would be an improvement, I’d like to see far more green planting to soften up the hard lines of the concrete.

  5. It would be nice if it was done more sympathetically to embrace ‘Madeira’. We love Madeira and spend a lot of time there. We are concerned that Madeira is going to lose it’s identity which is what attracts many visitors. The new design is too modern. Madeira will end up like Singapore where they got rid of a lot of ‘little India’ and then regretted it! With all the ultra modern buildings Madeira will become just like any other city. That will be a very very sad day.

  6. All those steps and not a handrail in site! Madeira excels at not putting handrails where they should be.

    1. How I agree with you, LG! The planners forget they too are going to get old and need handrails on steps. Looks like we won’t be venturing down there.

  8. I’d like to see a lot more green planting to break up the hard lines of the stone and concrete.

  9. Looks great. Let’s hope the work can be carried out swiftly and not involve years of disruption.

    I agree about the lack of handrails, especially bearing in mind the demographic of the island’s visitors.

  10. I am a serial Madeira tourist Whilst I recognize that parts of the marina are in need of an update, I would like to see the greenery preserved or expanded. A contemporary concrete desert will not be an attraction. Phil

  11. As a travel industry executive that sells a LOT of Funchal, I am SO excited! We will actually be there for a day in March on the Viking Sea – so it will be nice to see the “in the works” project and post about it to our clients. I agree that the end product is very modern and does not really promote the historic nature of the port – but the former buildings did not do that either. To be honest, the port was a bit of a “dump” by tourism standards – so I think having a beautiful entry to a historic city center will be an incredible economic driver for Funchal and the entire island. We look forward to seeing the progress in March and the finished product in the future.

  12. Ghastly. Could be LIverpool – or anywhere !
    I suppose it might appeal to all those young digital types they are always crowing about.
    For the rest of us (who wouldn’t want to use all those steps anyway), it holds no attraction whatsoever. All that concrete – not what Madeira should be all about. Send all those architects on a wee cruise round the Med or Caribbean and let them see what a marina should look like.

  13. They need at least 100 more berths and by the time it is built that will not be enough, looks like it was proposed by people do not have boats
