  2. I find it hard to believe that there are only 140 South Africans on Madeira my guess is that excludes South Africans who have been granted Portuguese citizenship due to ancestry. Equally the numbers of Ukrainians seems low considering how many were living here before the recent influx following the invasion by Russia? And where on earth do the 1885 “others” come from considering the list of individual nations included in the statistics?

    1. These are foreigners registered as residents. It includes visitors nor citizens who immigrated from other countries and are now citizens.

    1. I created this chart. The source is DREM (Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira), and the document is “Estatísticas Demográficas
      da Região Autónoma da Madeira – 2022”

    Im also very surprised at how few South Africans seem to be here.

  7. Well they should do is make a study how many of this foreign residents manage to learn and speak the language or are even trying to learn . I know it is very difficult to learn and even to understand for the foreign but I don’t they can aspect the locals pass all the time speaking in English or even translating for them . And I talk by experience I have a British husband that can read and understand Portuguese when people talk slow but to speak the language will be a long road .

    1. Isabel Oliveira – I am visiting Madeira soon and do speak a little Portuguese as I lived and worked in Porto, Portugal when young. Have been brushing up my Portuguese hoping to put it into practice soon. ??

        It is excellent from you trying to practice Portuguese very good enjoy your trip to Madeira . I m from Madeira but did live in UK from 1999 until 2018 today I live in Sintra in the historic area .?
