Waves of up to 5 meters remain tomorrow on the south coast of Madeira

Maritime unrest, partly caused by the passage of depression ‘Irene’, will still be felt during the day tomorrow, on the south coast of Madeira.

The Port Authority of Funchal highlights this in the update of the strong wind warning forecast for this Thursday, released later this afternoon.

Until 6 pm tomorrow, “very fresh to strong W/SW winds are expected, gradually decreasing to moderate to fresh from early in the morning”, says the Captaincy, in the note sent to the newsrooms. Even so, she points out that visibility will be good to moderate.

As for swell, W/NW waves of 2.5 to 3.5 meters are expected on the North coast, gradually changing to NW waves of 2 to 3 meters. On the south coast, W/SW waves will be between 4 and 5 meters, gradually decreasing to 2 and 3 meters.

In view of these sea conditions, the Captaincy recommends “the entire maritime community and the population in general to take care, both when preparing to go to sea, and when they are at sea or in coastal areas, namely: reinforcing mooring and keeping a close eye on moored and anchored vessels; avoid walks near the sea or in areas exposed to sea agitation, such as the protection jetties of ports, cliffs or beaches, avoiding being surprised by a wave; do not practice recreational fishing activity, especially near cliffs and cliff areas frequently affected by breaking waves, always bearing in mind that in these conditions the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas”.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for maritime unrest that will remain in force until tomorrow, at 12 noon, for the south coast of the island of Madeira and the island of Porto Santo.
