Play Airlines announces direct flights between Madeira and Iceland

Play Airlines announced today that it will operate direct flights between the island of Madeira and Iceland, with the inaugural trip scheduled for October 15, 2024. From then on, the Icelandic low-cost airline will have weekly flights, always at Tuesdays.

”We are very excited to launch flights from Madeira. The island is absolutely stunning and I believe there will be a lot of interest and demand for flights between Iceland and Madeira. In all the destinations where we are present, we are more competitive in the prices we charge compared to the competition. We want to make travel more accessible and I am sure that our flights in Madeira will be well received by everyone who would like to visit our beautiful country, Iceland”, says Birgir Jónsson, CEO of Play Airlines, in a statement.

According to the same source, Play Airlines “offers passengers the possibility of extending their stopovers for several days in Iceland, at no additional cost, if they wish to visit the country before continuing their journeys across the Atlantic”.

The company’s destinations in North America include Baltimore, Boston, New York and Washington DC, in the United States, and Toronto in Canada. In Iceland, “visitors have the opportunity to explore natural wonders such as waterfalls, glaciers, geysers and extraordinary wildlife just hours from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, rich in culture, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife”.

Play Airlines performed its first flight in June 2021 and currently operates a fleet of 10 Airbus A320/321neo aircraft. The average age of planes is just over 2 years, which allows passengers to have comfortable and safe journeys.

The same source adds that the company “presented, in 2023, a solid record with 83% punctuality on flights and its cabin crew was voted the best, by USA Today, and also the best low-cost airline in the North of Europe”.

“’Pay less, Play More!’ is the airline’s mission, offering competitive prices in all its markets. With Play, passengers can spend less on plane tickets to better enjoy destinations”, highlights the company.
