Albuquerque appointed president of the Regional Government this Wednesday

Because the approval of a new government only requires a simple majority, the Representative of the Republic came to the conclusion that the PS/JPP agreement “has no chance of being successful in the Legislative Assembly”, unlike the PSD which guaranteed a parliamentary influence agreement, Ireneu Cabral Barreto decided to summon Miguel Albuquerque, head of the PSD list, to present himself this Wednesday at 12 noon at the Palácio de São Lourenço to be appointed president of the Regional Government.

Ireneu Barreto admits that there are conditions to take office in the government next week.

“If everyone is concerned about being as quick as I was, I think there are conditions for the Government to be sworn in next week”, he concluded.

    1. much like the situation in the UK where the Tories have been in power for the majority of the years since WW2 and thanks to FPTP more often than not had a majority in Parliament with under 50% of votes cast for them!

      1. So, in the UK and you’re very brave to make any comparison of the UK with Madeira, one party has been in power for the majority of years since WW 2 because of it’s FPTP system, while the Madeira system has produced the same thing. The answer? I personally prefer FPTP.

    1. Not so fast Joe, Madeirenses are not exactly simple. They backed the devil they know, the party that contributed so much improvement to their living standard.
      Let’s not demonize what we have.

  5. Possible explanation is that the people living up in the mountains couldn’t be bothered to vote while those with business interests in Funchal will get up at the crack of dawn to vote. Mountain people are dependant on the government for their grants and other social benefits so do not want to upset the apple cart. They are probably unaware or don’t care that economic investment will only happen in the capital to the exclusion of all the other municipalities. We have seen major investments in government capital expenditure as well as direct foreign investment but all limited to Funchal, nothing ever gets spent elsewhere. The previous government was on a slightly veiled policy of limiting or in fact shutting down any tourist attraction that did not benefit its friends in Funchal. The grottos in Sao Vicente are a prime example of this.

  6. Who else is there to vote for? They’re all corrupt. It’s about pick your poison. Look what the PS has done to the mainland ????. The population would rather the status quo than a change they prefer not to live with. I’ve read often about the desire for a ferry from the mainland. Nice for putting your car on and taking a trip – I too would love that. But have you ever thought about the quality of tourist and onslaught into the island? Just look at Mallorca with tourism onslaught, Lampedusa with refugee onslaught and Canaries also refugee onslaught. A change in leadership could turn the island into tent city. So us citizens would rather live with the status quo, knowing there are people on the take. Better the devil you know.

    1. But they only have around 25% of total electorate support! I think voting should be compulsory since at least then the results would truly reflect what people voted for. If you don’t support any candidate then spoil your ballot paper that says far more than abstaining. Equally some of the smaller parties might get more support knowing that everyone is voting and the old “why vote for them nobody thinks they can win” mentality would have less of an argument.

      1. I could favour compulsory voting but disagree that spoiling your voting paper says more than abstaining. Writing, None of the above, doesn’t explain why you have taken the decision not to vote, just the fact that you have. So you have the same thing, those who haven’t cast a vote by abstaining, those they who spoil their ballot paper. How many people would travel any distance to spoil a ballot paper, when by staying at home they achieve the same result.
