Fires: President of the Regional Government visits affected areas today

The president of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, will travel today to areas affected by the fire that broke out a week ago and has already destroyed more than 4,000 hectares of forest on the island.

The move was announced on Tuesday night, at the end of yet another day in which the opposition criticized the executive and Albuquerque, to the point that the PS admitted a commission of inquiry, which has responded with accusations of political exploitation by the parties.

On Tuesday night, the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) indicated that the “most worrying” focus was in Curral das Freiras.

The rural fire in Madeira broke out a week ago, on August 14, in the mountains of Ribeira Brava, spreading on Thursday to the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, and, over the weekend, to the municipality of Ponta do Sol.

Fighting the flames has been made more difficult by the now-reduced wind and high temperatures, but there is no record of destruction of homes or essential infrastructure.
