Raimundo Quintal says it would be “a disaster” to build an underground car park in Praça do Município

I have to totally agree, halve the amount of car rentals, and put a stop to this huge traffic congestion.

Raimundo Quintal, geographer and former Councillor for the Environment at Funchal City Council, criticises the fact that the local authority insists on building an underground car park in Praça do Município.

“In a city with over 100,000 inhabitants and a huge tourist pressure, where there is no bus terminal that allows connections between urban and intercity public transport, the executive of the Funchal City Council insists on the insane objective of building an underground car park for private cars in Praça do Município. A disaster, both for the built heritage and for mobility in the historic centre”, he wrote on his Facebook page.

“It is time to say no”, says the geographer. And he maintains: “It is time for citizens concerned about the quality of life of future generations to unite with the aim of stopping the movement of destruction of the natural and cultural heritage in Funchal, Madeira. It is time for mayors and government officials to be forced to learn the meaning of the word sustainability”.

The construction of an underground car park is one of the subjects highlighted in today’s printed edition of DIÁRIO Notícias. The paper reports that the Funchal local authority will ask the DRC for an opinion and maintains its intention to build a car park for half a thousand cars in Praça do Município “as long as the architectural and cultural heritage there is safeguarded.
