Wind in Santa Cruz once again affects Madeira Airport

Operations at Madeira International Airport are experiencing further disruptions late this Thursday afternoon due to strong winds in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The latest gust, recorded by the weather station at 2:40 PM, reached 68 km/h.

According to real-time data provided by the Flightradar24 and ANA Aeroportos platforms, adverse weather conditions have already forced the diversion of a flight. The Marabu flight from Hamburg, scheduled to arrive at 16:05, was unable to land on the Madeira runway and diverted to the island of Porto Santo.

At this moment, several aircraft are performing holding patterns in the Region’s airspace, waiting for a change in wind intensity that would allow for a safe approach. This situation includes flights from Wizz Air Hungary, originating in Warsaw (16:05), Marabu, from Nuremberg (16:20), and Condor, originating in Dusseldorf (16:30).

It looks like most flights are eventually landing, but it seems an everyday occurrence this week, which is a bit of a nightmare for anyone travelling,  and it seems to pick up unexpectedly so its very hit and miss.
