    1. Unfortunately these roads aren´t maintained anymore. Hiking along them is possible but there is some risk of rockfall. And they are partly exposed to very exposed. The sections shown in the video start end end at:
      Section Ribeira Inferno (it is NOT drivable!!)
      Start waterfall Agua Alto (GPS 32.809934, -17.060025)
      End GPS 32.813596, -17.071316

      Section Boa Ventura – Ponta Delgada (seems to be drivable, even on streetview and contains 2 viewpoints)
      Start Roundpoint Boa Ventura (GPS 32.820309, -16.975586)
      End Roundpoint PontaDelgada (GPS 32.821851, -16.990286)

      I would love it if Madeira would maintain the old roads and open them as bike routes only. But I guess it is too dangerous and expensive.

  2. Fantastic memories of driving it before the tunnels, quite hair raising to say the least when if you can imagine it was two way traffic. They opened some one way for tourists but that now seems gone forever what a shame.

    1. Agree with Suegarageau……glad we had the opportunity to drive those roads before they wr closed. No question the nw routes are a whole lot safer tho!

      1. It would be a good investment to open again with Covered areas where required to minimise risk.
        This is what the tourists need, not more tunnels.

  4. How well I remember driving this road and terrified when we came direct contact with a tour Bus. We had rented a cab driver named Mr. Souse and good thing. At the end of the road reaching our dissertation had him stop and ran into the nearest Pub and ordered a double of Marcida. That was my first trip to Madeira bank in 1998.

  7. Shouldn’t we start fundraising to re-open these roads. They are among my most populair roads to drive on Madeira! Fantastic to drive these!

  8. Several years ago we had a week’s holiday based in Porto Moniz. One day we walked along the Antiga all the way to Seixal. The new tunnels were open so we only saw 2 🚗🚗 heading for Porto Moniz along the old road. The fun came walking through the old tunnels where we ended up walking through a sheet of water coming down through the cracks in the rock! Thankfully it was a sunny day so we soon dried out. Got to Seixal just in time as the heavens opened. Took a cab back 🚕

  9. Thank you for beautiful video of the most spectacular drive in all the world which we did several times in the past. A great test of one’s driving skills when passing cement lorries and tour buses!
    Following the tunnels, it became one-way for a while, now closed. Must affect the economic situation of the north coast as tourists don’t want to drive through endless tunnels. It would be lovely to have the road re-opened if even one-way from Porto Moniz to take in the spectacular views driving east. Memories are made of this….!

    1. I believe they keep one section passable to cars but there is one section where the old road has collapsed and gone so impossible to reopen.

Thank you for these beautiful video ,sure brings back happy memories.when i was growing up in Madeira ,my father loved to go to the festas arrail to Ponta Delgada…and we went every year,so much fun on a big rented bus full of people.scary tho my mom really was so afraid .hahaha,but was so fun at the same time ,really miss those old days,really love to pasd there again…breathtaking view.they sould maintain in better shape.,tunnels have no view ,,❤🌴🏡🏞🌄🚍🚖🏚
