  2. Since 1961 been coming to Madeira first as a seaman. Then 1990 after a devoiced met my wife that comes from Madeira. We brought a home in Machico 1999 to retire there. But my wife could not leave her children or grandchildren so we spend 6 months a year in UK and 6 months in the wood.

    1. I first visited Madeira in 1968, looking to build or buy a restaurant, it didn’t happen but I fell in love with the Island and the people.
      Many of the comments posted here speak of the overbuilding, too many hotels, the drop in the “quality of the tourists”, the over commercialization of Funchal, in general the down marketing of their holiday spot. Yes, I think some of the architecture is ugly but I see more houses built around Funchal and occupied by Madeiran’s.
      Too many restaurants. In 1961 one of my Madeiran friends was working at Bazar Du Povo, an English lady approached and asked him if he would like to come to England and work in one of her hotels. Returning home to consult Dad, he was told, there’s nothing for you here. Forty years later he came back with his Madeiran wife and refurbished the family home. I wouldn’t like to go back to those days.
      I came over last Monday, with heaven forbid Ryan Air, There were three parties of young ladies, about 18 in total, all with the statutory bottle of Vodka in their hand bags. But no problems, some of the body art was a bit over the top, but hey ho, each to their own. All of these new visitors will need looking after.
      Being of some age I don’t welcome change but life moves on, not always the way we like it to. As a long time visitor and owner in Madeira with a Madeiran wife I’d be interested in your thoughts, was it better in the 60’s ? Has it improved for Madeirans ?
