Who Uses Google Earth?

To be honest I have not used Google earth in years, and the images were so dated, but for some reason I looked on there today and the images (at least for my area) are bang up to date, within the last couple of months.

Are you a regular user of Google Earth? Is it being updated more frequently? are your areas of the island up to date?

Is this due to that mapping plane that was flying over the islands a while back.?

When I get time I will explore some more.

Being at Munchies most of the time, we are not getting round the island that much, but hopefully soon, I can do a few trips round the island and see what’s been going on. New places to see, and see some favourite areas. ???

  2. Aha funny that Tobi I did the same thing yesterday here in London ,And yes very up to date,Could even see the car registration parked on my driveway. Not sure that’s a good idea though.

  4. I’m getting a very odd mix of old and new! Opposite the Front of the Carlton, looking down hill, starts with the old buildings pre Hole in The Wall development. Then as you go down it amazingly turns into the new conversions! But interesting to be reminded of how much it has changed.

    I tend to use Google Maps ‘Street view’ if I’m going to drive to somewhere I’ve not been before, so I can at least ‘preview’ the last couple of miles (looking for things I need to watch out for for turns etc. It saves me getting lost and missing roads, junctions etc.

    What did we do when we all had to rely on paper maps? !!!!

  6. The present picture of Funchal is marked “image 2023 Airbus”. See: https://www.intelligence-airbusds.com/newsroom/satellite-image-gallery/ for more info.

    If in “View” the box “Historical Imagery” is ticked images since Dec 1985 can be viewed (top left)

    As far as correctly marked locations are concerned do NOT rely on them. Eg: I was looking for Rua do Bom Jesus 58 and was given a marking only to find there is NO no. 58!!!

  7. If in “View” the box “Historical Imagery” is ticked, images from early 2000 till now can be seen.

  8. Hi, I just checked out Google earth for were I live, Gatwick UK and it’s at least 2 years 7 months old ?

  9. I use it quite regularly to check and see the layout of places in terms of parking our lovely Milly. Some of these narrow lanes are frightening ?.

  10. 1. You need to distinguish between Google Earth (mostly satellite imagery) and Google Street View (based mostly upon camera equipped cars driving the streets).

    2. Google Earth imagery for Madeira is pretty up-to-date. You can see the latest image date in the bottom left corner of your screen when you zoom in on a place. For example, Funchal Marina = 7/5/2023, Sao Vincent’s beach = 9/5/2023.

    3 Street View images depend upon when the Google cars last surveyed the area. They obviously do this more often in more built-up areas.

  11. If you think Google street view images are old, I just checked Bing(Microsoft) equivalent and their images of my street are 12 years old!!

  12. Nice topic to discuss. In fact, for many years I had totally forgotten Google Earth even exists.

    After reading your blog on Saturday, I compared Google Earth [7.3] and Google Maps [satellite option] with the reality in my home town in Germany.
    The first is definitely out-dated more than ten years, the second less than five, more than three years.
    (Since we had one very bad and two other heavy storms during this period, killing a lot of distinctive trees, it´s easy to tell.)

    Now, I´ll add Google Earth to my route planning on Madeira. Just for fun.
