  2. Who paid for this? What was the cost? Did it benefit anyone? Could a better use of the money benefit society?

    I can just see money going up in smoke.

    2. … Lots of people benifit ,, ie Anyone who experiences it ,, Local people absolutely love it, it’s a massive part of their year ,, it attracts thousands of tourists every year, which in turn benefits local businesses ,, it’s eagerly anticipated by the whole Island ,, it’s a big benefit to society whatever the price ,, Money well spent …

      2. Spot on Russell. The revenue generated from the entire holiday season exceeds the cost and supports a lot. You need to spend money to attract more money and it works here. An added bonus is that the residents enjoy it while having an opportunity to showcase to the world.

        If you boil it down with the mindset complaints of this nature ….l the money used to pay for a smartphone to enable online complaints could be better spent on providing food to the starving.

        1. Firstly I did not say the money would be better spent on feeding the starving. I think that spending 4 times as much on an annual firework display as London does, that has 40 times the population of Madeira, IS excessive.

          In a balanced society one would think that dealing with the the issues of homeless beggars in the main streets of Funchal would take priority over a 5 second wonder. Once you can deal with the basic human issues such as these, you can spend your money on luxury tourism promoting projects.

          And how about improving and increasing the number of sandy beaches? Or building some toilet facilities along the numerous tourist walks? Or perhaps constructing proper car parks to cope with blocked roads in the usual tourist hotspots.

          Tourists don’t like to see people begging in the street. Some of this annual €1.3 million might have been allocated to housing the homeless, ironically displaced by Airbnb homes reducing the housing stock. Yes, promoting tourism has reduced long term rental availability and put people on the streets.

          Your analogy of money spent on smartphones should be spent on feeding people is ridiculous. Tax payers get the choice of if they wish to spend their money on personal smartphones but not on whether their hard earned money goes up in smoke as it is paid for by extra taxes.

          High taxes and the lack of affordable accommodation is driving young Madeirans to leave the islands. Blowing up 20 tonnes of fireworks is not going to fix this problem.
