MADEIRA WITH 29 MORE CASES, ALL LOCALLY TRANSMITTED

Today there are 29 new positive cases to report. These are cases of local transmission, associated with contacts or contexts of previously identified positive cases.

There are also 20 cases of recovered patients, 268 of which are currently active in the Region.

  1. I was just wondering with so many flights coming into Madeira, how many tourists are testing negative at the airport but maybe getting the virus a few days later and mixing with other people without knowing they`ve got it. Is it one of the reasons why it is spreading or are locals not being careful enough?

    1. You have to be in fairly close contact, for a time, 15 minutes is spoken of and neither you or they wearing a mask. Sit and think how often do you do this with a local ?

      1. I would encourage people to turn only to official sources for information on transmission risks: the virus is much more transmissible than is being said here. One person not wearing a mask can infect others even if they are wearing masks, and there is no safe period of exposure. This is a situation in which rumours will kill people. Stay safe everyone, until the crisis has passed.

    2. If anything, tourists are most likely to infect other tourists. Glad to say that the missus and I aren’t tourists. We have been travelling to Madeira for 24 years and probably over 40 visits so we are holidaymakers!

  3. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a tourist as ‘ a person who travels or visits a place for pleasure ‘ .
    I don’t understand how you think you are not doing just that .
    By your theory, when does one transition from a tourist to a holidaymaker ??

  4. This is very concerning. The virus is starting to become out of control. I hope Miguel Albuquerque has got a plan for after the New Year to combat this otherwise more deaths will occur. Stay Safe Madeira

    1. The plan will be to vaccinate the entire population of Madeira. Should be a rapid process once vaccinations reach to island, hopefully by spring 2021.

    2. It now appears that Brits may not be able to travel to the EU after January 1st due to the EU Covid rules .

  6. Hi Jane. Yes I read that too, I wonder if that will be case here or whether there will be some form of exception for economic reasons..?

  7. No idea Ruby . It would certainly decimate the economy of Spain, Portugal and Greece to name but a few . It would severely impact airlines which have already suffered a lot .
    Hopefully for Madeira, a compromise will be found for the economy.
    The scary thing is , it’s literally days away .

  8. My husband and I arrived on Monday for our second visit in 2 months. There is a marked difference from our last visit in that we find more people wearing masks outdoors but markedly less social distancing in shops and bars. People are too close together. Blaming tourists is not helpful as there are very few here this week, being the first week flights have resumed from England. On our flight there were quite a few groups of returning Madeiranese but while waiting in the queue for the test they were nowhere to be seen and one large group headed to the front and were allowed to leave. Does anyone know why this would be? They did not appear to be carrying private test certificates and if they were not tested it would be a big lapse. I would like to know if there is a different system for islanders just out of interest. It is very sad to see the restaurants in the tourist hotel area with not one customer last night even though the Christmas lights are on and beautiful to see. Madeira needs the tourists to return badly, please take no notice of people passing opinions while not in Madeira. No one here is blaming us or being unfriendly. The test is not pleasant, I hate it, but the welcome is warm. Please return and support local business.

    1. No difference for Madeirans arriving, in fact even worse as they have to be tested twice, so many are being tested say in the UK before departure, to make it quicker for the second test here which needs to be 5 days apart.

  9. I have read that it is up to individual countries to determine which countries flights are allowed in so maybe Portugal will allow UK flights. A lot of people of a certain age now waiting for the vaccine and not wanting to take the risk of getting covid before innoculation which will harm tourist business in the meantime of course. Looking like a very quiet few months ahead if that is the case.

  10. Agree Ruby . Many older people who have been extremely careful over the last few months will no doubt wait for their vaccination before going on holiday. I personally don’t think the risk of travelling is worth it.

  11. Thanks for the info Tobi. Poor people having to be tested twice. Today, Friday, there seems to be more tourists around thank goodness. No need to be afraid, everything is Covid safe in the hotels. I see no risk here, we plan to return for a month in January.
